A Century of Loss: Remembering the Passenger Pigeon

July 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the death of the last Passenger Pigeon, and provided opportunity to reflect how far conservation efforts have come, or not.  While no excuse for celebration, the signifcance of this milestone is summed up in this very poignant article by naturalist Joel Greenberg published in The New Yorker:
